One hundred thirty-eight people have died in a boat accident in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to provisional police reports.
The accident took place in the vast country's western Bandundu province on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
"The boat was badly overloaded and it didn't make the rough waters," Reuters quoted Jolly Limengo, provincial inspector of police for Bandundu.
"People here don't know how to swim. Our provisional toll is 138 dead," Limengo added.
Due to decades of conflict that have left the country with a poor infrastructure, travel by air and river are often the only option for travellers in the Congo. Accidents due to overloading or overcrowding are common.
