Real Zaragoza claimed three big points at Rayo Vallecano on Monday with a 2-0 triumph in a battle of bottom-half sides that moves Zaragoza seven points clear of the drop zone.

Rayo created its share of chances but was wasteful in front of goal, while Zaragoza was more economical and finished off a chance 20 minutes into the match as Jose Movilla set up a close-range goal for Franco Zuculini.

The hosts continued to squander opportunities as the game shifted into the second half, and against the run of play, Zaragoza went two goals up as Apono showed the opposition how to finish, burying a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Rayo offered little in response after that, and only managed to test goalkeeper Jimenez Roberto with 20 minutes to play, but he tipped a shot from Triguero Tito around the post.
