EL PASO, Texas – Matt Willms scored 20 points and led three other players in double digits as UTEP defeated NAIA Loyola New Orleans 84-49 on Saturday night.
Willms scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half of the season opener while UTEP outscored the Wolf pack in the final 20 minutes 49-28. Julian Washburn scored 12 points with eight rebounds, and John Bohannon grabbed eight rebounds also along with 16 points. McKenzie Moore scored 15 points and tied for a game-high five assists with Justin Crosgile. UTEP finished with 25 assists total.
Loyola (N.O.) struggled offensively in its exhibition game, going 0 for 7 on 3-pointers and finishing the night with only one assist. Jalen Gray and Kyle Simmons each scored 12 points.
Both teams got a slow start as Loyola (N.O.) made its first shot four minutes in to tie the game, 2-2.
