WBC Suspends Adrien Broner For Low Verbal Blow About Mexican Fighter Carlos Molina

The trash talk in boxing typically happens before the fight. Not in the case, however, of the bouts that took place on Saturday at the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

The World Boxing Council on Wednesday afternoon announced that it was suspending fighter Adrien Broner for “racially offensive statements” he made after celebrating his 10-round unanimous decision over the Mexican fighter, Carlos Molina.

In a statement, the boxing organization said “Broner is hereby suspended from participating in any WBC sanctioned championship and will be excluded from the WBC ratings until the time he makes a public apology satisfactorily to the public.”

Broner, 24, who recently held the WBC lightweight title and also fancies himself something of a rapper, called himself “the can man” and mentioned “Africans” in a post-fight interview with Showtime’s Jim Gray.

Then he rhymed, “And I just beat the f--- out of a Mexican.”

Gray immediately called him out on it, admonishing the boxer to “show some class and dignity” before asking about having fought in a higher weight class.

Broner then said, “Excuse my French,” before answering.

The WBC’s statement read, “The World Boxing Council holds human equality as its banner,” adding that, “since words have different meanings and can be interpreted in different ways , the WBC is issuing this open letter to Adrien Broner to either clarify what he meant with his words or to issue a public apology.”

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions which represents Broner, on Sunday told BoxingScene.com, “Sometimes [Broner] says stuff without really thinking, because as I came out into the ring the first thing he said to me was 'I'm so sorry that I said what I said.' He's a young guy.”

Insensitivity wasn’t limited to Broner.

On Tuesday, after returning to Argentina, the loser of the main event, Marcos Maidana, told the local press, “Mayweather is a baby girl, all the time trying to find excuses. Rivals who fight him are intimidated with the show he puts on but it is not what it seems,” he said. “Every time I hit him, he did not know what to do."
