United States goalkeeper Tim Howard signed a contract extension Thursday through the summer of 2016 with English Premier League club Everton.

The 33-year-old Howard initially joined Everton from Manchester United on loan in 2006, and made a permanent switch in 2007. In addition to 73 starts for the United States, Howard has played 256 games for Everton.

"I couldn't be happier," Howard said, "I've had a smile on my face ever since we finalized the deal. When you have a really good relationship in life and both sides are eager to continue and keep that going, it's a no-brainer.

"This hasn't been a knockdown, drawn-out type of negotiation with meetings or anything like that. They were very happy to keep me here and I was very, very happy to stay.

"It's a place that is home for me."

Everton, which hosts Tottenham on Saturday, is 13th in the EPL standings.
