London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Tottenham announced Tuesday that Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed the club's new manager.

Pochettino arrives at White Hart Lane on the back of a successful 18-month stay at Southampton. The 42-year-old helped lift the Saints from relegation contention to an eight-place finish in the Premier League last term.

"In Mauricio I believe we have a head coach who, with his high energy, attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our club," Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement. "He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality.

"We have a talented squad that Mauricio is excited to be coaching next season."

Pochettino, who takes over from caretaker manager Tim Sherwood following the mid-season sacking of Andre Boas-Villas, will be tasked with improving upon Tottenham's sixth-place finish in the English top flight last season.
