Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs) won the gold medal in the 72 kg./158.5 lbs. at USA Wrestling's University World Championships on Oct. 4 in Kourtane, Finland. It marked her second world title in eight days after winning the senior world championships at 67 kg./147.5 lbs. on Sept. 27. On the men's side, Max Nowry (Wheeling, Ill.) claimed gold at 55 kg./121 lbs., while Jamel Johnson (Greensboro, N.C.) took bronze at 60 kg./132 lbs.

HIGH MARKS

Reigning national champion Billy Crawford (Johnstown, Ohio) once again stood atop the podium in the men's double trap at the 2012 Fall Selection Match after shooting 331/350 targets on Oct. 7 in Kerrville, Texas. In the skeet competition, Haley Dunn (Eddyville, Iowa) finished first on the women's side, while Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.) earned the top men's honor.

BADMINTON

The mixed doubles team of Phillip Chew (Orange, Calif.) and Jamie Subandhi (Westminster, Calif.) won the gold medal at the XXVII International Gustavo Prata Badminton Cup, which ran from Sept. 26-30 in Paulo, Brazil. Chew also won the silver medal in men's doubles with Sattawat Pongnairat (Orange, Calif.).

BOBSLED/SKELETON

Steve Langton (Melrose, Mass.) defended his title as the fastest push athlete in the nation by earning his fourth 2012 U.S. National Bobsled Push Championship title on Oct. 6 in Lake Placid, N.Y. On the women's side, Aja Evans (Chicago) had the two fastest times to claim the title. Elana Meyers (Douglasville, Ga.) and Nick Cunningham (Monterey, Calif.) clinched the bobsled pilot push competition titles, while Veronica Day (Vienna, Va.) and John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) earned the skeleton push championship titles.

FIELD HOCKEY

Despite scoring first, the U.S. women's team fell to Australia, 6-1, in the title match of Champions Challenge 1 on Oct. 7 in Dublin to garner the silver medal. Earlier in the week, Team USA edged Wales, 7-2, in the quarterfinals before narrowly defeating Ireland, 2-1, in the semifinals.

FIGURE SKATING

Angela Wang (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned the gold medal in the ladies event at the 2012 Junior Grand Prix on Oct. 6 in Croatia. Wang scored 104.18 points for her performance to "Ladies in Lavender," and finished the week with a total of 162.65 points. Hannah Miller (Williamston, Mich.) finished second with 153.21 points. On the men's side, Harrison Choate (Weston, Mass.) earned his first career JGP medal, totaling a personal-best score of 185.39 points to claim the bronze.

Richard Dornbush (Corona, Calif.) had his largest career free skate score, 168.60, en route to 239.99 total points and a second-place finish at the 2012 Finlandia Trophy on Oct. 6 in Espoo, Finland.

GYMNASTICS

Senior men's tumbler Kalon Ludvigson (Pocatello, Idaho) won his third world cup gold medal in tumbling on Oct. 7 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ludvigson scored 74.400, two points clear of his closest competitor. On the women's side, Kainoa Park (Pocatello, Idaho) took fourth place in junior women's tumbling.

SOCCER

The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team beat Canada, 2-1, on Oct. 4 to secure a spot in the championship game against Mexico at the 2012 AGS Cup Championship in Benidorm, Spain. Earlier in the tournament, the U.S. picked up back-to-back wins over Morocco and United Arab Emirates before falling to Azerbaijan, 1-0.

TENNIS

James Blake (Tampa, Fla.) captured the Sacramento Challenger singles title on Oct. 7 in Sacramento, Calif. Blake earned a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Germany's Mischa Zverev. The doubles final was an all-American affair, with Tennys Sandgren (Gallatin, Tenn.) and Rhyne Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.) winning their first title on the pro circuit by beating Devin Britton (Brandon, Miss.) and Austin Krajicek (Tampa, Fla.), 4-6, 6-4, 12-10.

TRACK & FIELD

The U.S. men finished fourth and the women placed fifth at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships on Oct. 6 in Kavarna, Bulgaria. Augustus Maiyo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Luke Puskedra (Eugene, Ore.) led the men, as the pair finished 15th and 17th. Meanwhile, Maegan Krifchin (Dewitt, N.Y.) was the top runner on the women's side, finishing 13th.

Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (Rome, Ga.) and Mohamed Trafeh (Durante, Calif.) each defended their titles in the USA 10 Mile Championships on Oct. 7 in Minneapolis, Minn. Cherobon-Bawcom finished with a time of 53:43, while Trafeh covered the course in 46:56.

TRIATHLON

Kaitlin Shiver (Gainesville, Fla.) earned her first career world cup podium finish on Oct. 7 at the sprint-distance ITU Triathlon World Cup in Cancun, Mexico. In the final stop of the world cup circuit, Shiver earned a second- place finish with a time of 1:00.54. On the men's side, Jarrod Shoemaker (Clermont, Fla.) covered the course in 53:59 and finished fourth.

WRESTLING

The U.S. won three individual men's freestyle medals on the opening day of the Dmitry Korkin International on Oct. 6 in Yakutsk, Russia. Max Askren (Somers, N.Y.) earned the silver medal at 84 kg./185 lbs., while bronze medals were claimed by Chase Pami (Colorado Spring) at 66 kg./ 145.5 lbs. and Keith Gavin (Bethlehem, Pa.) at 84 kg./185 lbs. On the final day of competition, Les Sigman (State College, Pa.) earned the silver medal at 96 kg./211.5 lbs.
