Texas Southern University has named Darrell Asberry its new head football coach.

Asberry takes over the job from interim head coach Kevin Ramsey, who guided the team to a 4-7 record and will have the opportunity to stay as the defensive coordinator.

Asberry was the head coach at Shaw University for the past five season and guided the team to a mark of 40-25 with a 30-13 conference record. He guided the team to CIAA Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

"If you look at his background and his track record, he developed Shaw into one of the premier Division II football programs," said Texas Southern athletic director Dr. Charles McClelland. "He has a very high graduation rate. We wanted somebody who was going to come in and be a great football coach and a great fit for Texas Southern University and I think Darrell can help us achieve our goals."

He is the 15th head coach in Texas Southern history.
