Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Robert Streb fired a 7-under 65 in the morning on Thursday and he holds the first-round lead at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Streb picked up his first career PGA Tour victory at the fourth event of this season, The McGladrey Classic in late October.
Patrick Reed had a share of the lead in round one at Quail Hollow Club before dropping a shot late. The four-time tour champion is tied for second at 6- under 66 with Kevin Chappell.
Stewart Cink, who has not won since the 2009 British Open, is tied for fourth following a 5-under 67. He is currently tied with Webb Simpson, Ricky Barnes, Michael Thompson, Chesson Hadley and Billy Hurley III.
Defending champion J.B. Holmes carded a 3-under 69 and is tied for 13th. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who earned his first PGA Tour victory at this event in 2010, is one shot further back and tied for 30th at 2-under 70.
Streb, playing among the morning groups, started his round on the back nine. At the par-5 10th he got up and down for birdie and followed that up with a 19-foot putt for birdie at 11.
Following a trio of pars from 12, Streb knocked in a 5-footer for birdie at the par-5 15th. The 28-year-old continued to roll with a 35-foot birdie conversion on 17 and he made the turn at minus-4.
A 15-footer for birdie dropped for Streb on No. 2 and three holes later he was able to get up and down for another gain at No. 5. Another birdie at the par-5 seventh got him to minus-7 and Streb ended there after a pair of pars at eight and nine to complete his bogey-free round.
"It's the first time in a while I feel like I have my putter working," Streb admitted.
Reed began his day with a bogey on one, but he got that shot right back with a 36-foot gain on two. Reed then went on a roll with four straight gains from No. 5 to get him into contention and up to minus-4.
Around the turn, Reed kept rolling with a 13-foot birdie at 10. After three straight pars from 11, Reed made gains from four and 14 feet at 14 and 15, respectively. That pulled him even with Streb at the time.
However, Reed found a bunker on the par-3 17th and that led to his lone bogey. The 24-year-old finished with a par at the last to end at minus-6.
"I felt like coming into this week I haven't really been hitting the tee shots very straight and that's kind of key around here," Reed said. "Even though I only hit eight fairways, to me that seems like a lot. The putter was working really well, I was making a lot of good putts. I feel like my iron swings were really solid."
Chappell, playing the back nine first, rolled in birdies at 10, 14 and 15. A bogey at No. 1 set him back some, but a tap-in birdie at four got Chappell back on track.
Chappell rolled in a 37-foot eagle putt at the par-5 seventh and followed that up with a gain from five feet on eight. Chappell closed with a par to tie Reed in second.
NOTES: Only three of 25 first-round leaders have won on the PGA Tour this season ... Streb made birdie on all four par-5s on Thursday ... Besides winning The McGladrey Classic, Streb has never held a lead after any round on the PGA Tour ... Reed already has one win this season at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions ... Chappell has never won on tour and has missed eight cuts this season.
