The New England Patriots clinched the AFC East for the ninth time in 11 years with Sunday's road win over the Denver Broncos, but the victory proved to be costly as defensive end Andre Carter will undergo surgery.

The Boston Herald reported on Monday that Carter will need surgery to repair a quadriceps injury, and the indication is that it's season-ending, according to Carter's agent Carl Poston.

Carter was carted off the field at the end of the first quarter after he went down grabbing his knee.

The 32-year-old Carter leads the Patriots with 10 sacks this season.
