Washington, DC – The Washington Redskins have signed kicker Billy Cundiff and waived Graham Gano.
Washington head coach Mike Shanahan made the decision to switch kickers after Gano had apparently beaten out Neil Rackers for the job. Rackers was released on Monday.
Cundiff was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
The 32-year-old Cundiff had spent two full seasons and part of another with the Ravens, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2010 after connecting on 26-of-29 field goal tries. However, he made 28-of-37 attempts last year and also missed a 32-yard kick in the closing seconds of Baltimore's 23-20 loss to New England in the AFC Championship Game.
In eight seasons with the Cowboys, Saints, Browns and Ravens, Cundiff has gone 132-of-172 on field goal attempts and has missed just one of his 201 extra- point tries over 101 games.
The Ravens brought in undrafted rookie kicker Justin Tucker out of the University of Texas over the summer to compete with Cundiff.
Gano and Rackers had been battling for the Redskins' kicking job. Gano, who joined the Redskins in December 2009, was just 31-of-41 on field goals last year and had five of them blocked.
Rackers signed with Washington in the spring after spending the 2011 season with Houston. He connected on 32-of-38 field goal tries and all but one of his 40 PATs for the Texans last season, and has made 80 percent of his field goal attempts in a 12-year career for Cincinnati, Arizona and Houston.
