Detroit Red Wings forward Darren Helm has been taken to the hospital after being cut by a skate in the first period against Nashville in Game 1 of a Western Conference quarterfinal series.

While killing a penalty in the first period, Helm threw off his glove and skated off the ice before heading to the locker room.

Detroit later announced on its Twitter account that Helm was taken to a hospital and that the injury was to his wrist.

Helm had missed the final 10 games of the season with a sprain to his medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
