St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Rams made it official on Tuesday, releasing veteran cornerback Cortland Finnegan.
According to a report in the Post-Dispatch last Wednesday, both head coach Jeff Fisher and team executive VP Kevin Demoff contacted Finnegan and told him that the move would be made.
The paper also revealed that releasing the former Tennessee Titan will save the Rams $4 million in cap money for the upcoming season. Finnegan was due $6 million in base salary plus a $3 million signing bonus due by March 13, and would have counted $10 million against the salary cap, the paper revealed.
The Samford product, who signed a deal with St. Louis for five years at approximately $50 million in March of 2012, recorded only 27 tackles and one interception in seven games (five starts) last year. He picked up 101 tackles, three picks and one sack in 16 games two seasons ago in his first campaign with the Rams.
