Tampa, FL – Hours after his Tuesday release from the Boston Red Sox, Lyle Overbay has found a new home with the New York Yankees, agreeing to a minor league contract with the club.
The 36-year-old was released by Boston after going just 9-for-41 over 19 spring training contests, but the injury-plagued Yankees are lacking a true first baseman on the roster at the moment.
New York's Mark Teixeira is out indefinitely with a partially torn tendon sheath in his right wrist, which he injured during batting practice for the World Baseball Classic.
With Teixeira out and Travis Hafner unable to play the position any longer, Juan Rivera and Kevin Youkilis were the only members on the roster with first base experience prior to the signing of Overbay.
The left-handed batter is coming off a 2012 season in which he split time with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Atlanta Braves, combining for a .259 average with two homers and 10 RBI in 65 total games.
With his most productive seasons coming as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays between 2006-10, Overbay is a lifetime .270 hitter and has totaled 133 home runs with 581 RBI over the course of his 12-year career.
