NYCFC knocks off Revs at Yankee Stadium for first win

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York City FC got the home portion of their inaugural season off to a flying start on Sunday goals from David Villa and Patrick Mullins handed NYCFC a 2-0 win over the New England Revolution at Yankee Stadium.

Two days after witnessing their expansion counterparts, Orlando City SC, claim their first win in MLS, NYCFC followed suit, as Villa's 19th-minute goal and Mullins' 84th-minute strike gave the club its first ever three-point effort, and sent the 43,000-plus fans home from Yankee Stadium thrilled.

The home side had the better of the play early on as both clubs worked to get used to a small pitch at the stadium. NYC's first great chance came in the sixth minute as Slovakian international Adam Nemec slipped through the defense and put a good effort on frame, but Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth came up with a nice save.

Villa had a quality chance in the 17th minute, but the ball got caught in his feet which allowed Shuttleworth to make the save.

But just two minutes later, Villa etched his name into the NYCFC history books when he was played through by a nice ball from Ned Grabavoy and slotted it into the top right corner for the club's first goal on home soil.

New England had several chances to find an equalizer in the opening 45 minutes, but failed to capitalize on them and went into the break down a goal.

NYC seized control of the play in the second half, with Villa firing several quality chances in Shuttleworth's direction.

NYC head coach Jason Kreis sent rookie Khiry Shelton onto the field as a substitute in the 66th minute and he immediately changed the game when he got free in on goal and was pulled down by Revs defender Jose Goncalves, resulting in a straight red card from referee Mark Geiger.

Villa lined up the ensuing free kick at the top of the box and whipped it in with plenty of pace, but Shuttleworth did well to get fingertips to it and knock it over the crossbar.

NYC doubled its lead six minutes from time when Villa broke free down the left flank and played it across for Mullins, who smashed it home against his former team with his first touch.

The fourth official's board showed three minutes of added time, which Kreis' team was able to see out with ease to claim their first-ever win.
