Fargo, ND (SportsNetwork.com) - Instate rivals North Dakota and North Dakota State will resume a longstanding football rivalry next year after it has been dormant since 2003.
The Sept. 19, 2015 game at NDSU's Fargodome will be the first between the two schools on the NCAA Division I level.
The two schools also announced Friday they will meet again in Fargo on Sept. 7, 2019.
Per the terms of the agreement, NDSU will provide UND cash guarantees of $125,000 for the first game and $140,000 for the second game, plus 500 tickets and the option for UND to bring its band and cheer team.
"Our football student-athletes deserve the chance to play against North Dakota State and the game has been off the schedule for too long," UND's first-year head coach Bubba Schweigert said in a UND announcement of the series. "It is time to do whatever it takes to get the game back and if that means going down to Fargo a couple of times to renew this great rivalry, then that is something the football program, along with our administration, decided is necessary."
UND holds a 62-45-3 advantage in a series that dates back to 1894. UND won the most recent meeting in 2003, 28-21 in Grand Forks. At the time, they were both members of Division II and the North Central Conference.
NDSU now plays in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and has won the last three FCS national championships. UND is a member of the Big Sky Conference.
The two teams play for the Nickel Trophy, which was inaugurated in 1938, with UND holding a 35-30 lead. The trophy is a 75-pound replica of a previously minted U.S. coin that measures in 2 inches thick and 22 inches in diameter.
