PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The Philadelphia Flyers traded for the rights to Phoenix netminder Ilya Bryzgalov on Tuesday and will look to strike a deal with the Russian after the Coyotes failed to retain him.
The Flyers sent a minor-league player, a 2012 third-round draft pick and a conditional pick to the Coyotes in exchange for the 31-year-old Bryzgalov, who is set to become a free agent after spending the last four seasons in Phoenix.
Philadelphia will try to seal a deal with Bryzgalov before the veteran netminder enters free agency on July 1.
"We're going to give it our best shot," Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren said a conference call according to the NHL's official website (NHL.com).
"You give up an asset to get a chance to get in early, so we have every intention of trying our best to get a deal done. We'll see what we can do."
Bryzgalov finished last season with a record of 36-20-10 and a 2.48 goals against average, helping Phoenix reach the playoffs for the second year in a row.
