Newcastle, England – Newcastle has confirmed that defender Steven Taylor is likely to miss the rest of the season because of an Achilles injury.
Taylor suffered the injury in Newcastle's 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday as he hobbled off the field and tests revealed the need for surgery.
A club spokesman said: "Steven sustained an Achilles injury at the end of our game with Chelsea. After medical assessment, he will be having surgery and it is likely he will be out for the rest of the season."
The 25-year-old has started every game in the league for the Magpies this season as part of one of the best defensive units in the Premiership.
Despite the loss, Newcastle still resides in sixth place in the league but will miss Taylor's presence in the middle of the back line.
