Morris' buzzer-beater lifts No. 13 Iowa State over Texas

Kansas City, MO ( - Monte Morris made a jumper at the buzzer to lift the 13th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones over the Texas Longhorns, 69-67, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference Tournament on Thursday night.

The Cyclones, who trailed by 16 late in the first half, scored the final 12 points of the game to claim victory. Morris' buzzer-beating shot was Iowa State's only lead of the game.

Morris ended with 24 points for the second-seeded Cyclones (23-8), who beat Baylor in last year's Big 12 title game. Georges Niang added 22 points and six assists.

Iowa State will play 15th-ranked Oklahoma in the semifinals on Friday.

Jonathan Holmes tallied 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the seventh-seeded Longhorns (20-13). Isaiah Taylor contributed 13 points and five assists.

"We played our hearts out," said Taylor. "I just want to commend all my teammates, my coaches. Our coaching staff put us in a great position to win a game, and unfortunately we couldn't pull it out."

Trailing 67-57 with 3:56 remaining, Morris made two free throws to spark Iowa State's 12-0 run. Dustin Hogue and Morris made consecutive 3-pointers around a 10-second violation on Texas to make it 67-67.

The teams swapped empty possessions before Texas got the ball back with 38 seconds left. Taylor missed a jumper and Javan Felix misfired on a long 3- pointer.

Hogue came down with the defensive rebound and called timeout with 5.8 seconds left. The ball went to Morris in the corner and he rose up over Demarcus Holland for the game-winning shot.

"At the time you are just hoping and prayin' it goes in," said Morris. "I got a great look at it and got the ball in for us and we was able to walk off the court with a victory."

Ahead 15-14, Texas created some distance with a 17-2 run. Felix tallied eight points during the burst that Myles Turner capped with a 3-pointer for a 32-16 edge.

The Cyclones closed out the first half on a 9-4 spurt to get within 36-25.
