Almost two years to the day after he was named head football coach at Memphis, Larry Porter was fired Sunday following two losing seasons.

Hired on November 29, 2009, Porter went just 3-21 as head coach of the Tigers, including a 2-10 record this season. Memphis lost each of its last four games and was 1-7 in Conference USA play.

In a press release announcing his firing, the school noted that Porter's team relinquished late leads in games against UAB, Marshall and Middle Tennessee State.

Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson said in a statement that it was "in the best interest of our program to make a change at this point."

"We were proud to have Larry Porter, one of our former football lettermen, as our head coach and wish him nothing but the best in his future athletic endeavors," Johnson said.

"The expectations for the 2011 season were to see marked improvement in the team. Now that the season has been completed, I do not feel that we have seen enough improvement for the future to justify keeping this football staff in place for another year."

Memphis will hold a press conference on Monday afternoon to announce "a plan for having a new football coach named as quickly as possible," according to the release.

Before he was hired by Memphis, Porter spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach to Les Miles at LSU and was lauded for his recruiting. He also coached under Miles at Oklahoma State from 2002-04.

Porter played for Memphis from 1990-93 and totaled 2,194 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns -- both among the top 10 in school history.
