Real Madrid and Brazil left back Marcelo is expected to miss at least three months after breaking his foot in training with Brazil.

The 24-year-old was injured in a training session on Sunday as Brazil prepared for an upcoming friendly with Japan, and scans have revealed that Marcelo has broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

Marcelo, who has started eight of Real's nine games in La Liga and the Champions League this season, will return to Madrid for further treatment, with the club not ruling out surgery in an effort to speed up the recovery.

The injury comes at a terrible time for Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who saw fellow left back Fabio Coentrao leave Portugal's World Cup qualifying defeat against Russia on Friday because of a groin injury.
