Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Carl Gunnarsson, a key member of the team's young nucleus and a potential restricted free agent, signed a two-year contract with the team on Tuesday.
Gunnarsson, 24, finished with 4 goals and 20 points in 68 games last season while blocking 120 shots, fourth on the team and third among defensemen. He logged over 21 minutes of ice time in each of the final 24 games of the season as the Maple Leafs battled for a playoff spot.
Gunnarsson also had a pair of assists and a plus-5 rating in helping Sweden to the silver medal at the 2011 IIHF World Championship.
A sixth-round pick by Toronto in the 2007 Entry Draft, Gunnarsson has 7 goals and 35 points in 111 NHL games over the past two seasons.
