Giants' Wilson 'likely has structural issues' in elbow

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson likely has structural issues in his elbow, manager Bruce Bochy announced Saturday.

If the issue is confirmed -- Bochy said that Wilson would be seeking a second opinion, probably from orthopedist Dr. James Andrews -- the righty will likely require season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Wilson underwent that procedure -- officially, ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction -- as a student-athlete at LSU in 2003. For pitchers, postoperative rehabilitation takes at least one year.

The 30-year-old tied the Giants' club record with an MLB-best 48 saves en route to a World Series championship in 2010.

Included his two appearances this season, Wilson has recorded 171 saves and a 3.21 earned run average in 315 appearances over his seven professional seasons, all with San Francisco.

Bochy said he'll use the closer-by-committee system to fill Wilson's role for the forseeable future. Options include Sergio Romo, Santiago Casilla and Jeremy Affeldt.
