Flyers' Giroux has surgery on finger following golf injury

Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Flyers released a statement Thursday night saying that forward Claude Giroux had successful surgery on his right index finger.

"Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux had successful surgery this afternoon on his right index finger performed by Dr. Katherine Boyd at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada," the statement read. "Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger. Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks."

Giroux signed an eight-year contract extension in July.

Since making his debut in the 2007-08 season, the 25-year-old has become the star of the team and has totaled 91 goals and 199 assists over 333 games in six seasons.

The first-round draft pick (22nd overall) of the 2006 draft notched 13 goals and 35 assists in 48 games last season, but did finish minus-seven and missed the postseason for the first time since joining the team full-time.
