The Football Association has upheld a match suspension for Arsenal striker Gervinho after dismissing an appeal from the London club.

Gervinho was given a straight red card during Arsenal's match against Newcastle United on Saturday after he appeared to slap Joey Barton in the face. The standard punishment for such violent conduct is a three-match ban.

Arsenal claimed that the punishment was excessive, but The FA dismissed its appeal.

The suspension will take immediate effect, meaning Gervinho will miss Arsenal's next three Premier League matches against Liverpool, Manchester United, and Swansea City.
