Ecuador to fly home body of soccer star Christian Benitez, who died after game in Qatar
DOHA, Qatar – The president of the Ecuador's soccer federation says it has hired a plane to bring home the body of Christian Benitez, a striker who died Monday after playing his first game for his new Qatari club.
Qatari club El Jaish has not provided details about the 27-year-old player's death but says Benitez didn't complain about his health Sunday. The team is awaiting a medical report that is expected by Wednesday.
Ecuador Football Federation President Luis Chiriboga said "everything has already been sorted to bring home the remains of Chucho Benitez."
Benitez arrived in Qatar on a transfer from the Mexican club America in early July. He helped the team win the Mexican championship last season by scoring 30 goals.
