Turin, Italy – Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero will not remain with the club once this contract runs out after the Serie A season, but it was unclear if the Italian World Cup winner will retire.
Del Piero, 36, joined Juventus in 1993 when he was just 18, and has gone on to play almost 700 matches in all competitions - a club record. He is the club's all-time leading scorer, and helped Juventus win the 1996 Champions League and five Serie A titles.
Club president Andrea Agnelli confirmed Tuesday Del Piero would not sign a new contract with the club beyond this season. Del Piero won the 2006 World Cup as Italy claimed its fourth title, but has played sparingly for Juve this season.
Juventus sits atop the Serie A table after six games with three wins and three draws.
