Fabio Capello is expected to sign a contract in the next few days that will make him the new manager of Russia's national team.

Capello and the Russian Football Union met last week regarding the vacancy left by former boss Dick Advocaat, and the Russian officials have since confirmed that they believe the former England manager is the right man to take charge.

"Today we have decided to name Fabio Capello as the manager of Russia," the RFU vice president, Nikita Simonyan, told the Itar-Tass news agency.

"We are now waiting in Moscow for the finalization of the remaining details of the contract before he signs. Once [Capello] and his representatives arrive, we believe they will sign the contract. I think it will happen on Wednesday or Thursday."

Advocaat stepped down as Russia's manager after a disappointing showing at Euro 2012 and he had already accepted a role with PSV Eindhoven, leaving the 66-year-old Capello to step in.

"If everything is completed in the best possible way, as the announcement from the Russian federation states, I will be happy and proud," Capello told Italian ANSA news agency.

"If, as I believe the case will be, all goes as planned in terms of the contract, it will be a splendid adventure. Russia are a great nation."
