Liege, Belgium (SportsNetwork.com) - Ruben Bemelmans and Niels Desein have Belgium on the cusp of its first Davis Cup quarterfinal in eight years.
The duo teamed to capture a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 doubles victory over the Swiss tandem of Michael Lammer and Adrien Bossel on Saturday to give Belgium a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five first-round tie.
Switzerland won last year's Davis Cup with Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka leading the way. The two Grand Slam champions, however, are not part of the country's defense.
The highest-ranked player in this weekend's tie is Belgium's David Goffin, but the world No. 21 did not play the first two days as he battles a back and rib injury.
Steve Darcis, ranked No. 102, will get the first chance to clinch the tie for Belgium on Sunday in the opening reverse singles match against Henri Laaksonen.
Both were winners on Friday, as Laaksonen outlasted Bemelmans in five sets for the first point of the weekend before Darcis hammered Michael Lammer in three quick sets to even it at one apiece.
If Laaksonen can prevail again, the deciding fifth rubber is currently slated to feature Bemelmans and Lammer. However, Darcis may try to play for the hosts if needed.
The Swiss lead the all-time series between the two sides, 4-3, including a victory in the most recent encounter in 2008.
Sunday's winner will meet the Canada-Japan victor in July's quarterfinals.
