Bayern Munich signed striker Nils Petersen to a one-year contract extension through the 2014-15 season Friday, and loaned him to Werder Bremen for the upcoming Bundesliga season.

The 23-year-old Petersen joined Bayern last summer from Energie Cottbus, where he led the Bundesliga 2 in scoring. He struggled to find a role for Bayern and will sharpen his Bundesliga skills with rivals Bremen in 2012-13.

"Nils is a huge prospect as a striker," said Bayern Munich director of sport Christian Nerlinger. "We want him to have the chance of gaining game practice, which he can do in Bremen.

"The fact we've also extended his contract demonstrates how much we value him. We believe he has a successful future ahead of him in the Bundesliga and with FC Bayern."

Petersen scored 25 goals for Energie two seasons ago, but had just four goals in 15 appearances in all competitions for Bayern last season.
