Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona winger Ibrahim Afellay will undergo surgery to repair an recurring thigh injury, the club confirmed Tuesday.
"Ibrahim Afellay will have an operation this Thursday 22 August on a chronic muscular injury in his right quadricep," read a statement on the club's website.
Afellay's time with Barcelona has been plagued by injuries since his arrival in 2011. In addition to the winger's thigh problem, he suffered cruciate ligament damage in September 2011 that kept him out of action for the majority of the 2011-12 season.
The 27-year-old was loaned to German club Schalke last term and has yet to feature for Barcelona since making his return to the Catalans.
