Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis posted a round victory Monday at the inaugural $553,125 Winston-Salem Open.

The former Australian Open runner-up Baghdatis handled American Ryan Sweeting 7-5, 6-1 on the hardcourts at Wake Forest University.

Japanese qualifier Kei Nishikori overcame Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), while Frenchman Julien Benneteau blitzed Brazilian fellow qualifier Ricardo Mello 6-3, 6-3 in opening-round action on Day 2.

Additional first-round wins came for Belgian Steve Darcis, Israeli Dudi Sela and Argentine Carlos Berlocq.

The winner of this final U.S. Open tuneup will collect $74,630.
