Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta will take no further part in his club's season as an ankle injury will sideline him for 6-8 weeks.

Arteta sustained the injury in Arsenal's 2-1 defeat against Wigan on Monday, and scans have confirmed that although there is no break, the former Everton man's season is over.

"It is season over for him, but he doesn't need surgery, which is what we were scared of, so he will be out for six to eight weeks," Gunners boss Arsene Wenger told Arsenal Player. "It is an ankle problem, but just a sprain."

The 30-year-old has netted seven goals in 31 league games this campaign for Arsenal, which is five points clear of both Tottenham and Newcastle for third place.
