North Korea's Kum Ae An was able to follow up her 2008 silver medal in the Beijing Games with a gold medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, defeating Cuba's Yanet Bermoy Acosta. An was able to win the gold medal on a tani-otoshi throw.

Acosta in defeat was able to take home the silver medal on a day in which most of the top seeds were knocked out in the early rounds of the tournament. Earlier in the day, An took out former world champion and tournament favorite, Japan's Misato Nakamura.

Italian police officer Rosalba Forciniti took home one of the bronze medals, defeating Luxembourg's Marie Muller by decision in a close battle.

France's Priscilla Gneto was able to defeat Belgium's Lise Heylen by ippon with an ashi-guruma throw.
