Mumps outbreak reported at Sacred Heart University

Sacred Heart University says eight people have been diagnosed with the mumps on campus since an outbreak was reported earlier this year.

The Fairfield school says other cases are under investigation and undergraduate students who might have the viral infection are advised to seek care at the school's health center.

The university said Wednesday that the students affected by an outbreak announced in late March have all fully recovered.

The infection causes swelling in the salivary glands and cheeks. It spreads through saliva or mucus when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can spread by sharing eating utensils or touching surfaces with unwashed hands.
