UK: Threat of Libya Arms Proliferation Is Real

LONDON-- Britain's military says it is taking the threat of weapons proliferation in Libya very seriously and working to ensure missing Qaddafi-era weapons don't end up in the wrong hands.

The U.K. government said this week a British team is helping deal with the issue of surface-to-air missiles, some called MANPADS, and small arms that have gone missing from weapons stockpiles.

Britain's Chief of Joint Operations Air Marshal Stuart Peach told reporters Thursday he does not know how many missiles are unaccounted for but that the U.K. is "on the case" and working with Libya's new government to try to secure and destroy any missing weaponry.
