MADRID – Spain's Interior Ministry says police have found a large amount of explosives in a secret stash near the border with France which investigators are linking to the Basque militant group ETA.
Agents of the Civil Guard found no recent activity at the deposit, which contained seven large containers with explosives. The ministry said the material was found in a rural area of Irun, a border town in northern Spain's Guipuzcoa province.
ETA announced in 2011 it was renouncing violence in its campaign for independence for the Basque regions of northern Spain and southwest France. It has yet to disarm or disband. It is blamed for over 800 deaths from 1968 to 2010.
