NAIROBI, Kenya – NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — An official in the semiautonomous Somali region of Puntland says security forces in his northern region stormed a Panama-flagged cargo vessel taken by pirates a day earlier and freed it.
Minister of Marine Transport and Ports Said Mohamed Raage says authorities decided to free the ship by force after pirates refused pleas to surrender and instead killed the Pakistani captain of the ship.
Raage told The Associated Press the security forces engaged in a brief shoot-out with the pirates before outgunning them. He says two officers were injured and all seven pirates were detained.
The QSM Dubai was seized Wednesday in the Gulf of Aden while headed for a port in the breakaway northern region of Somaliland. It has a crew of 24 and sailed from Brazil.
