JOHANNESBURG – Police and trade union officials say at least two people have been shot, one fatally, in ongoing union rivalry at South Africa's troubled Lonmin platinum mine.
National Union of Mineworkers spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said three shop stewards were shot on Monday, one fatally, at the union's office at Wonderkop in Marikana, some 70 miles (112 kilometers) northwest of Johannesburg. But police spokesman Col. Sabata Mokgwabone said two mineworkers were shot, with one dead and the other hospitalized in critical condition. There was no way to immediately reconcile the discrepancy.
Scores of people have been killed in rivalry between the government-allied NUM and an upstart union.
At Marikana in August, police shot and killed 34 striking miners and wounded 78 in an attack that shocked the nation.
