LONDON – A memorial service has been held in Glasgow, Scotland, for six people killed when a garbage truck veered out of control in the city center.

Police in Scotland said Tuesday that five females and one male had died in the crash which came at the height of the Christmas shopping season.

Police said 10 people, including the driver, also were injured when the driver lost control of the truck Monday afternoon, hitting a number of pedestrians.

Six people remained hospitalized Tuesday, police said.

Rev. Stuart Smith said during the memorial service that "a scene of celebration and festive lights in George Square turned to devastation and despair" in a few minutes time.

Police said the incident was not terrorist-related. Unconfirmed reports suggested the driver became ill suddenly and lost control.
