A minke whale has a second chance at life after a group of strangers banded to together to drag it off a beach in Chile.

The quick-thinking fishermen and other locals jumped into action after spotting the eight-ton beast stuck on the sand in Arica.

They used a rope and tug boats to haul the whale, thought to be almost 12 meters long, back into the Pacific Ocean.

Fisherman Alfredo Bustos said: "We tied some ropes around it. It was a bit of a struggle but we were able to do it, to hook her and get her out."

The beaching of a minke whale is rare at this time of year for Chile.
