ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Afghanistan say they plan to begin joint operations to fight drug trafficking.
The counter-narcotics ministers from the two countries, Arbab Mohammad Zahir and Zarar Ahmad Muqbel Osmani, made the announcement on Thursday in Islamabad.
The announcement followed a two-day meeting between Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and the United Nations on the drug problem in the region.
The ministers did not say exactly when the joint operations would begin or what had prevented them from taking place earlier. Pakistan and Afghanistan already conduct joint operations with Iran.
Afghanistan produces about 90 percent of the world's opium, and much of it flows out of the country through Pakistan and Iran.
