SAN PEDRO, Ivory Coast – Witnesses charge Ivory Coast's military is torturing scores of people accused of taking part in recent attacks.
One man, who says he was held for two weeks at a military camp, tells The Associated Press that he and others were beaten with sticks and belts, and others were tortured with electrical shocks.
The roundup of detainees is in response to a series of attacks on Ivory Coast's military that have sparked fears of renewed violence in the West African country.
Violence following Ivory Coast's disputed November 2010 election killed at least 3,000 people, and the recent attacks are being blamed on supporters of former president Laurent Gbagbo.
Capt. Sekou Bema Ouattara denied the allegations of physical abuse and defended the military's campaign to root out state enemies among the population.
