A Mexico City police officer is being investigated following a shooting incident that wounded a student on the main campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

A statement from the city prosecutor's office says the shots were fired Saturday after a crowd verbally and physically assaulted the officer and three others officials sent to the campus to investigate a complaint of a cellphone theft filed by a student.

The statement says the officer reported he fired shots into the air trying to deter the crowd of about 20 people and a bullet struck a male student in the thigh. It says the officer is being treated for bruises and is under arrest while the incident is under investigation.
