Berlin's lively clubbing scene, the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle and the romance of the Rhine Valley helped Germany set a tourism record in 2013 with new figures showing nearly 411 million overnight stays.

The Federal Statistical Office said Monday the number of overnights was up 1 percent over 2012, to 410.8 million according to preliminary numbers.

Most of the travelers were from within Germany, with 339.2 million overnights, virtually unchanged from 2012. Guests from outside Germany rose 4 percent to 71.6 million overnights in 2013.

The numbers are based on reports from establishments with at least 10 beds.

The office says more detailed statistics will be released later this month.
