FIFA files criminal complaint in Switzerland against unnamed individuals in World Cup bidding

FIFA has filed a criminal complaint with Switzerland's attorney general about the behavior of unnamed people involved in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter says he filed the complaint Tuesday at the request of FIFA ethics judge Joachim Eckert.

Eckert says in an interview released by FIFA that it concerns "suspected unlawful activity in connection with Switzerland."

No details were given as to which financial or business laws might have been broken.

The German judge maintains "there is insufficient incriminating evidence" to question the FIFA board's choice of Russia and Qatar as World Cup hosts. Still, "there are indications of potential illegal or irregular conduct in certain areas."

Eckert says these must be investigated by FIFA "and by the relevant national criminal prosecution authorities."
