THE HAGUE, Netherlands – The chairwoman of the lower house of the Dutch parliament has resigned over her role in a scandal surrounding a deal made by prosecutors 15 years ago with a convicted drug trafficker.
Anouchka van Miltenburg on Saturday became the third member of Prime Minister Mark Rutte's Liberal Party to quit amid the scandal over the deal in which the drug trafficker was paid millions of guilders by prosecutors who were actually trying to strip him of his criminal profits.
Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten and his deputy Fred Teeven resigned in March after it was revealed that Teeven authorized paying the trafficker 4.7 million guilders.
Van Miltenburg says she has resigned because she did not tell an inquiry about a whistleblower's confidential letter linked to the deal.
