Walters scores in 25th minute and Stoke City FC shuts out FC Dallas 1-0 in friendly

Jonathan Walters scored in the 25th minute to lead Stoke City FC of the English Premier League past FC Dallas 1-0 in an international friendly on Saturday.

The combination that led to Walters' goal started after Kenwyne Jones tapped a pass to Erik Pieters from the top of the penalty circle.

Pieters made a touch pass that went past Dallas defender Stephen Keel and to Walters.

Walters, who was standing just inside the top of the penalty box, curled a right-footed shot into the back of the net from about 16 yards.

Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz prevented another goal in the 82nd minute after he stopped Cameron Jerome's penalty kick.

Jerome was awarded the penalty kick after he was fouled by Keel, but Seitz made a diving save to his right side to prevent the goal.

The Potters had to play the final minutes of the game with a one-man disadvantage after Andy Wilkinson was given a red card in the 82nd minute for a foul on Danny Garcia.

Stoke City goalkeeper Thomas Sorenson made a diving save to his left side to punch away a shot by Ramon Nunez to help preserve the win.

Former FC Dallas forward Brek Shea, who played for the team from 2008-2012 before he was sold to Stoke City in January, did not play in the game.

Shea is with the U.S. national team in Chicago in advance of Sunday's CONCACAF Gold Cup final against Panama.

The match is the second of three games in the United States for the Potters; Stoke City lost to Houston 2-0 on Wednesday night and will play Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Stoke City begins the EPL season on Aug. 17th against Liverpool.

The match was the first time that FC Dallas has played a team from the English Premier League in the 18-year history of the club.
