TOLEDO, Ohio – Malcolm Griffin scored 22 points to lead Toledo to a 73-60 win over Western Michigan on Wednesday night, earning the Rockets their first Mid-American Conference win and snapping a five-game skid.
Hayden Humes added a career-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Toledo (4-14, 1-3).
Humes made 11 of 16 free throws for the Rockets, who finished 26 of 34 from the line.
Although Western Michigan's 16 turnovers equaled the most by a Toledo opponent this season, they led to only 14 Rockets points. The Broncos scored 20 points off 13 Toledo turnovers.
After the Rockets led 37-23 at halftime, the Broncos cut it to 53-47 with 5:44 left on a Flenard Whitfield layup. Humes' free throw and Griffin's layup restored the Rockets' nine-point cushion.
Demetrius Ward scored 20 points and Whitfield had 15 for Western Michigan (9-8, 2-2), which has lost two of its last three.
