TCU's Fuente takes over Memphis football program

Memphis, TN – Memphis has named Justin Fuente, co-offensive coordinator at TCU, its next head football coach.

Fuente agreed to a five-year contract and replaces Larry Porter, who was fired late last month after going 3-21 in two seasons with the Tigers. He will earn a guaranteed $900,000 in 2012, while his contract includes performance incentives.

The Memphis job is Fuente's first as head coach. He has spent the last five seasons on Gary Patterson's TCU staff, initially joining in February 2007 as running backs coach. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2009.

"The University of Memphis is pleased to welcome Justin Fuente to the Tiger family," said Memphis president Dr. Shirley Raines. "Justin is an energetic and enthusiastic coach who has guided a highly successful offense at TCU and was instrumental in its Rose Bowl win last year."

TCU went 13-0 in 2010 with Fuente as play-caller, beating Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. It was the Horned Frogs' second consecutive BCS bowl appearance, following their Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State.

In Fuente's three seasons as coordinator, TCU set single-season school records for touchdowns, points scored and first downs, while also ranking among the nation's most productive offensive units. From 2009-11, the Horned Frogs won 35 of 38 contests, including a 24-game win streak in the Mountain West Conference.

The Tulsa native played quarterback at Oklahoma from 1996-97, and has helped develop record-setting quarterbacks for TCU. He tutored Andy Dalton, who became the school's career leader in every major passing category and is a current NFL Rookie of the Year candidate. TCU's current starter, Casey Pachall, is on pace to surpass Dalton's senior season totals.
